In 1703 Peter the Great built an iron-foundry on the shore of the Onega Lake on the place of a lonesome mill discovered by prospectors. Later the Petrovskaya Sloboda (settlement) developed around the foundry and the city of Petrozavodsk has been founded. The stamp features the monument of Peter I, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the building of the Federal Postal Service Department of the Republic of Karelia.
