№ 1100. The State banner of the Russian Federation

Peter the Great is considered to be the creator of the Russian tree-color banner. He ordered to raise the white-dark blue-red banner on all the trade and commercial vessels in 1705. The three colors of the flag, which became national in 1883, has received the official interpretation: the red color – “powerfulness”, the blue color is the color of the Mother of God, who keeps Russia under her protection, the white color is the color of freedom and independence. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 the tree color banner was reestablished as the banner of the Russian Federation. President V.V.Putin signed a Federal Constitutional Law “On the State banner of the Russian Federation” on the 25th of December, 2000.
