Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin (1842-1921) was a Russian geographer, traveller and explorer of Siberia and the Amur River region. He was one of the founding fathers of Anthropogene palaeogeography, the author of the study about the ancient continental glaciation and an anarchism theorist.

In 1864 Kropotkin accepted a position in a geographical survey expedition, crossing North Manchuria from Transbaikalia to the Amur, and soon was attached to another expedition up the Sungari River into the heart of Manchuria. In 1871 he theoretically proved the existence of firm ground north of Novaya Zemlya, in 1871-1872 he made his conclusions about a widespread occurrence of the continental glaciation in the Quaternary Period in the Northern Hemisphere.

The postcard with a commemorative stamp depicts a portrait of Pyotr Kropotkin against his notes; the main image features a terrain survey expedition.
