February 18, an official cancellation ceremony of a postage stamp dedicated to Grozny, a city of military glory, took place

The event was held in the Museum of Akhmat-Hadzhi Kadyrov, which is a part of the Memorial Complex of Glory named after Akhmat Kadyrov. Oleg Dukhovnitskiy, Head of the Federal Communications Agency, and Muslim Khutchiev, the Mayor of Grozny, took part in the event.

The city of Grozny has a proud and ancient history. It is the administrative center of the Chechen District, which has been the largest industrial hub in the North Caucasus and a center of oil extraction and refining in the region since the end of the 19th century. The nowadays’ Grozny is a dynamically developing capital of the Chechen Republic, which combines developments of modern architecture and careful preservation of historically important architectural buildings.

The Decree No 177 “On conferring the honorary title of the ‘City of Military Glory’ to the city of Grozny” was signed by the President of Russia on 6 April 2015.

The postage stamps features a cartouche dedicated to feats of arms of Motherland defenders, WWII military equipment and weapons — the Ilyushin DB-3 bomber, the 107mm M1938 mortar and an armored train 717 of the 36th independent battalion, which was relocated to the vicinity of Grozny in July 1942 to defend oil fields and which successfully repelled all the enemy attacks.

“Grozny received the honorary title in 2015 for valor, endurance and mass heroism shown by defenders of the city in fights for freedom and independence of our Motherland. The postage stamp will become pride and joy of any philatelic collection and will also be included into Russian and international philatelic catalogs, thus preserving the heroic history of Grozny and our country”, said Mr. Dukhovnitskiy.
